Dr. Sherzaman Taizi laid to rest

Peshawar: Noted writer, poet, intellectual and journalist and member of KhyberWatch, Dr Sher Zaman Taizai, who died on Tuesday in Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar, was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Pabbi town of Nowshera district on Wednesday. He is survived by a widow, two sons and three daughters. Born in 1931, Taizai was the author of 40 books including 15 in Pashto, 1 in Urdu and the remaining in English. He was considered to be the father of Pashto novel. His novels were thrillers and carried element of suspense. Dr Taizai was well versed in several languages including Pashto, Dari, Persian, Urdu and English and was translator par excellence. His literary work in English won him acclaim and he was awarded peace certificate in 1981 by the UNHCR. He was a research scholar on Afghanistan and Central Asia. For his meritorious services, he was awarded Tamgha-i-Imtiaz on March 23, 2009. Earlier in life, he served in Army Service Corps as a clerk and in the Intelligence Bureau in Peshawar as liaison officer. Later he served at the Afghan Refugees Commissionerate, Peshawar and as protection and programme officer at the UNHCR. He also served at The Frontier Post, Peshawar as assistant editor; and as editor of the BBC education project, New Home New Life, a trilingual magazine. He also remained associated with the Tribal Women Welfare Association as vice-chairperson and editor-in-chief of its bilingual quarterly, Neway Zhwand (New Life). Beside others, Dr. Rajwali Shah Khatak, chairman Pashto Department in UOP, Majeed Ullah Khaleel, GM PTV Peshawar, Dr. Fazal Raheem Marwat, Chairman Peshawar Text Book Board & Baacha Khan Research Center, Dr. Pervez Majhoor of Pashto department, Dr. Yasin Iqbal Yousafzi, Dr.Israr, Dr. Zubair Hasrat and Zahid Buneray also attended the funeral.. This to be noted that the author has just a day before his expiry, presented his recently published two books for the readership of KhyberWatch.com.
