Karachi, Monday, 03.05.2010: The Sindh chapter of the Awami National Party on Sunday celebrated the renaming of the North-West Frontier Province to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and organised a grand musical show as well in this connection at the Sea View beach, Clifton. Hundreds of Pakhtuns and others from different walks of life participated in the celebration. However, ANP Sindh President Shahi Syed claimed that the rally was attended by around 0.1 million people. The participants performed the traditional dance ´Attan´ on ´dhol´ music, while renowned Pashto singer Gulrez Tabassum had arrived from Peshawar especially for this show to sing Pashto songs and the Pakhtun anthem. Hundreds of ANP activists and around 2,000 police and Rangers personnel were assigned the task of providing foolproof security to the participants as there was a threat of a terrorist attack from those segments that were against the renaming of the NWFP. ANP Sindh General Secretary Ameen Khattak inaugurated the ceremony with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by Mufti Naeemullah praying for Pakistan’s stability, after which there was a spectacular display of fireworks. The ANP Sindh president took oath from the party workers and members that they would follow the policy of non-violence and not be involved in any violent activities. He paid tribute to President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and all the others who had played a role in the 18th Amendment and particularly in the renaming of the NWFP. He called education the backbone of the nation and said without it, strengthening and developing the nation was only daydreaming. He said religious extremists were playing with the lives of innocent people of the country in the name of jihad. ´´No one will call it jihad. It is an organised butchery of people. I don’t know how they will face God,´´ he added. He also said because of these extremists, hundreds of citizens had lost their lives, and at the same time, more than 2,400 brave soldiers had also been martyred. He further said they considered everyone from the Hazara division as their brothers, and no one could divide anyone through language diversity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He stressed the people to play their part for bringing peace in the country since “we are here because of Pakistan and without it we are nothing.” Meanwhile, the rally caused massive traffic jams in the city for more than three hours due to which a large number of people were stranded in the scorching heat. People going to the rally danced on the roads while hundreds of vehicles were stuck. At the same time, it also created problems for the residents of Clifton due to the massive crowd of people. The News International added; Renaming the NWFP as Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has reinforced the identity of the people of that province, Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh President Shahi Syed said on Sunday during the Jashan-e-Kyber Pukhtoonkuwa at Sea View. Syed further said that the Hazarewal should realise that some elements were misguiding them to create differences over the renaming of the province. He also paid tribute to President Asif Ali Zardai, the parliament and the constitutional committee for approving the 18th Amendment. The ANP Sindh had invited renowned folk singers from Peshawar and Quetta to the celebration, while the ANP Cultural Wing organised a fireworks competition among three different groups. Around 5,500 ANP workers were assigned the job of dealing with security at the event, while approximately 2,200 law-enforcers were deployed at various locations to control law-and-order. The whole area, mainly the stage, was cordoned of by the ANP’s Youth and sniffer dogs were used to guard against explosive materials. ANP workers and supporters were also baton-charged on several occasions by activists of the party, when the former thronged to gets seats near the stage. Workers of the nationalist´s party, meanwhile, had gathered in large number along Sea View to dance to the beat of drums. Some excited party workers told the media that Rs7 million were spent for the preparation of this event. The ANP had also arranged two large screens to display the function to the people. Syed paid tribute to the Armed forces of the country for fighting against terrorism and terrorists. He said that everyone had the right to conduct political activities and there should be no discrimination in this regard anywhere in Pakistan and particularly in Karachi. ´´Personal rivalries have always destroyed societies; we should avoid them,´´ Syed said. ´´The people of Pakistan should respect each other. The Constitution of Pakistan gives a chance to every citizen to take part in political activities. The ANP has made sacrifice on many occasion and will not refrain from doing so in the future either.´´ The roads leading to Sea View, meanwhile, as well as the stage were covered with red, and the T-shirts, headbands, armbands, caps that the crowd wore also matched the party´s flag. ´´We lost East Pakistan due to bad governance, and then repeated the same mistakes by intruding in Afghanistan´s internal issues,´´ Syed said. ´´The Afghan issue was also mishandled and Pakistan has paid heavy penalty in this regard. External forces are trying to gain control of Afghanistan and are creating an untoward situation in Pakistan, particularly at Pak-Afghan border. They should keep in mind, however, that such attempts will always be fruitless.´´ Daily Times, The News د پښتنو قامی سنګر- Sohail Raza Khattak
