Bonn, Germany (November 6, 2008), A delegation of the Awami National Party (ANP) visited Germany from November 3 – 5, 2008 and held meetings with different bodies of the German Bundestag (federal parliament) in a parliamentary exchange programme organized by the Hanns-Siedel Foundation, Pakistan. The delegation comprised of Ms. Bushra Gohar MNA, Mr. Sardar Hussain Babak, Minister of Education, Government of NWFP (Pukhtunkhwa), Dr. Haider Ali Khan MPA and Secretary Foreign Affairs of ANP, Mr. Hasham Babar, Additional Secretary General ANP, and Mr. Muhammad Raza, Managing Director of the Baacha Khan Foundation. The delegation exchanged views with Mr. Rolf Nikel, Deputy National Security Advisor to Chancellor Merkel and officials from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik), the Foreign Office, and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament. The delegation also met Mr. Paul Lehrieder, MP, President of the Pakistan-German Forum, Dr. Peter Ramsauer, MP, Chairman CSU, Gerda Hasselfeldt MP – Deputy President of the German Parliament. At the end of the programme, the delegation met journalists from leading newspapers of Germany. The topic of the discussion centered on evaluation of Pakistan’s counter insurgency in the Tribal Areas and parts of NWFP, options for a political solution of the security issues, evaluation of the G8-Afghanistan-Pakistan-Initiative, outcome of the mini-Jirga, prospects for the Pakistan-Afghanistan relations and development needs in NWFP. Members of the German parliament and government officials listened to the ANP’s perspectives and expressed their commitment to support Pakistan’s efforts to gain political and financial stability, and consider increased development aid for the tribal areas and the NWFP. Ms. Iffat Gardezi, deputy ambassador of Pakistan to Germany, hosted a welcome dinner for the delegation on arrival and hoped that the ANP delegation will be able to impress upon officials of the German government and the public representatives for further strengthening the Pakistan-German relations, especially in the field of commerce and trade. In the end the delegation also visited Bonn and talked to to the The leaders of Pakhtoon Social democratic Party Mr. Hidayat Bangash, Shereen Gerdival and Nasir Stori about the present Political Situation in the Region.
