Noted poet Iqbal Iqbal passes away

The News International MARDAN: Renowned Pashto poet, drama, short story writer and Khudai Khidmatgar Muhammad Iqbal Iqbal, known as Babu, passed away after protracted illness on Saturday.
His Namaz-i-Janaza was offered in Shah Jhee Baba, which was attended among others by Rahmat Shah Sahil, Shamsul Qamar Andish, Dr Israr, poets, writers, office-bearers and workers of the ANP, MNAs, MPAs, ex-MNAs, MPAs and large number of people of the area. The writer was laid to rest in Shah Jhee Baba graveyard amid moving scenes. His Qul will be held in Mohallah Sultanabad here on Monday. Muhammad Iqbal Iqbal was born in Babu Mohallah and he served as a clerk in the Excise and Taxation department. Babu also played a vital role in politics of the area and he was widely revered in the Khudai Khidmatgar Movement circles. He had great respect for the freedom fighter and founder of Khudai Khidmatgar Movement, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, commonly known as Bacha Khan. He loved to be called the soldier of Bacha Khan. Through his poetry he inculcated awareness about the Bacha Khan´s philosophy of non-violence among Pakhtuns. He was a staunch follower of Bacha Khan and he had returned the cheque sent to him by Ziaul Haq when he was in admitted to a hospital in Karachi. He was always using the word Pakhtunkhwa for the NWFP in his conversations, meetings and poetry. He was also the General Secretary of Ulasi Adabi Tolana (UAT), Mardan, which was organised by well-known poet and nationalist leader, Ajmal Khattak, about 36 years ago. He also wrote several dramas, songs for radio and PTV. His books ´´Da Livala Muhabat, Da Rabab Tang´´ (poetry), ´´Teli Pehrona´´(shot story) and ´´Palwasha´´ (poetry) have already been published. The Palwasha has also been given Adam Jhee Award. He also organised several Mushaira (poetic sessions) and literary meetings and book launching ceremonies in Mardan district. He fell ill some months ago after which he was admitted to a hospital in Peshawar wherein he breathed his last on the Saturday. Sunday, March 22, 2009
