Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was adopted with 264 votes of support. At least 20 votes were against the new proposed name.
2010 April 8 : NA on Thursday passed the Clause-3 of the 18th Amendment Bill, 2010 that deals with the renaming of NWFP province as ´´Khyber Pakhtunkhwa´´.An amendment motion was moved in the House by PML-Q members Shahjahan Yousuf, Amir Muqam, Farzana Mushtaq, Marvi Memon and Kashmala Tariq opposing the renaming of NWFP province.
Amir Muqam said that change of name will tantamount to forget the sacrifices rendered by the people of Hazara for the NWFP province and in many other ways.
He was of the view that after 64 years change of name is injustice with them and asked other parties to favour them.
Also Known nationalist lawyer Barrister Baachaa on Thursday 01.04.2010, rejected the hyphenated name of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for the NWFP and called for ending the long controversy by naming the province as Afghania.
In statement, he said Afghania was acceptable all around and the political parties should have given up their rigid stand to let the people of the province get on with other pressing problems.
Barrister Baachaa expressed his exasperation on the acceptance of a hyphenated name and said those opposed to the return of this province to its historical identity had succeeded in their nefarious design to leave Pakhtuns grope around in the dark for the recognition of their identity.
The senior lawyer said those who opposed the NWFP reverting to its original name were doing so simply for political point scoring. Their latest clever ploy, he said, of an offer of yoked name such as Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was designed to fool the Pakhtun leadership.
Elaborating, he said the deep-rooted plot of patching together Khyber and Pakhtunkhwa was to ensure that over the passage of time the easier to pronounce for the non-Pakhtun the word ´Khyber´ would become common in use. Not only the people of other provinces, but also non-Pakhtuns in this province would call the province Khyber rather than Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, he added.
Barrister Baachaa said during his incarceration in Haripur Jail during the Lawyers´ Movement he discussed the issue of renaming the NWFP with lawyers from Hazara who comprised the bulk of the imprisoned lawyers. He said there was outright rejection by a clear majority of lawyers from Hazara of the name Pakhtunkhwa; however, he said they had no reservations about the name Afghania.
The senior lawyer said that majority of the inhabitants of Hazara were Pakhtuns and, therefore, the sentiments and wishes of Hazara Pakhtuns could not be ignored altogether while renaming this province.
Barrister Baachaa reiterated his earlier warning that those who claimed to represent Pakhtuns in the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms had betrayed Pakhtuns’ trust and had earned the wrath of the Pakhtun nation by agreeing to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.- pakhtunkhwa correspondent
