PESHAWAR: With increasing research tools and a considerable improvement in academics especially in higher education at post-graduate and post doctoral levels, new practical ways are coming into play, accordingly researchers being conscious of the emerging socio-linguistic needs are utilizing their inquisitive potentialities to ding out new venues for the hidden treasure trove. It is noteworthy that young people are getting interested in bring out new things to forth and are enthusiastic more than their predecessors. Abdullah Jan Abid an active member of teaching faculty at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU)’s department “ Pakistani Languages” is a young inspired soul whose efforts in the field of research have received accolades from senior critics and research scholars like Dr Jamil Jaalibi, Prof Fatah Muhammad Malik, Iftikhar Arif, Dr Inamul Haq Javed, Ajmal Khattak, Prof Pareshan Khattak late, Dr Abdul Aziz Sahir, Dr Parvez Mahjoor Khesgi, Salim Raz, Hashim Babar and many others.
In 2006, he brought out a brief history of Pashto language and literature spreading over 530 pages in a very fluent and lucent Urdu titled ‘ Pashto Zuban wo Adab Kee Mukhtasar Tarikh’. For Urdu speaking readers it proved a crash course, for young researchers it is a bounty. In 2008, Abid edited and compiled research papers read out at a one day seminar held in Islamabad under the auspices of the joint efforts of AIOU, Pakistani Languages department and Pakistan Academy of Letters, Islamabad (PAL) highlighting the ‘emerging new literary trends in Pashto literature’.
This scribe also has had the privilege to attend the said seminar on the invitation of both AIOU and PAL authorities. Abid on the conclusion of the seminar had announced to publish all those papers into a book form and like me many participations present on the occasion might have taken his statement of publication the papers for granted and a cliché most often uttered on such concluding day or sessions of the seminars and research debates by the organizers to give due weight to their postures.
But contrary to the general norms and quite ture to his word he fulfilled his pledge and was able to bring out ‘ Pashto Zuban wo Adab Kay Jadad Rujhanaat’ modern trends in Pashto literature after putting together pieces by eminent researchers including Salim Raz, Dr Rajwali Shah Khattak, Dr Hanif Khalil, Dr Zubair Hasrat, Ismail Guahar, Dr Kumail Ali Qazalbash, Muhaib Wazir, Mustafa Kamal, Prof Aseer Mangal, Azmat Huma and Faizul Wahab Faiz.
They have presented their well-researched papers on various aspects of Pashto literature covering the evolution of Drama, fiction, poetry, prose, non-fiction, literary criticism and the emerging modern trends. The book also includes the report written in English by this scribe giving a gist of the seminar at the end. Recently Abdullah Jan Abid brought out his own M. Phil thesis titled ‘ Pashto Muhawarah -Tehzebi wo lisani Mutalah (Pashto idiom – A cultro-linguistic study). Pashto idiom as in other languages has numerous dimensions but Abid limited himself only to its cultural and linguistic aspects.
Other aspects could be socio-political or otherwise and psychoanalytical. It does not mean that Abid’s research has not covered these areas but a reader interested in linguistic survey might be expecting more and this could be possible only if a researcher is free an institutional research limitations. If this was not the case only Pashto tapa could provide the required material on the topic, as we all know tapa as a folk genre is rich in poetic devices and social, political, historical and cultural allusions. As a young researcher Abid Jan prefers to walk on the unbeaten path and that is why he conducted research on a comparatively challenging topic. Both titles are fruitful for Language students and also for common readers as after going through them one feels a step closer to the depth of the emerging trends and idiomatic expressions considered to be the jewel of a language lending artistic beauty to a literary
