PESHAWAR, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 : Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti Saturday announced initiation of a poverty alleviation programme in the province with a primary allocation of Rs1 billion.
The programme would be named after the great freedom fighter and founder of the red-shirt movement, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, lovingly called by his followers as Bacha Khan. The chief minister announced this while addressing a function held here in connection with the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Khan Abdul Wali Khan Multiplex at the Civil Secretariat. The three-storey Khan Abdul Wali Khan Multiplex will be constructed at a cost of Rs230 million within a stipulated time of three years. The building, stretching over an area of 0.12 million acres of land, would have 100 rooms including cabinet room, library and other facilities. Lauding the services of Khudai Khidmatgars, the chief minister also announced provision of employment to 200 heirs of the members of the Khudai Khidmatgar Movement in the province. He pledged that at least one mega project in each district of the province would be attributed to Bacha Khan, Wali Khan and Khudai Khidmatgars. Haider Hoti said the politics of Wali Khan was as deep as a sea, adding that it was next to impossible to explain his struggle in words. He went on to add that the ANP was proud of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in Peshawar, Babra (Charsadda), Takar (Takhtbai) and presently in Swat and Buner. Regarding situation in Federally-Administered Tribal Areas, he said the region required administrative reforms to assure the tribesmen that they were stakeholders in the country’s affairs. He said Fata people had representation in both the Senate and National Assembly but despite the fact that it has a close proximity with the Frontier province it had no representation in the provincial Assembly. “The strength of the provincial assembly will be incomplete until the people of the tribal belt are given representation in the provincial legislature,” reiterated the chief minister. He said situation in Afghanistan had a great impact on the tribal areas and the Frontier province, and that improvement in the neighbouring country would ultimately herald peace in Fata and Pakhtunkhwa Province. The chief minister was critical of the handling of the situation in Swat by the previous rulers of the province. He said some people shut their eyes to the Swat situation to protect their near and dear ones and pushed the whole province into the fire of militancy. The chuef minister went on to say that some harsh decisions would have to be taken to put a leash on growing militancy in parts of the province. However, he said, the government after coming into power followed the philosophy of the non-violence and, as a goodwill gesture, released Tanzim Nifaz-e-Shairat-e-Muhammadi chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad, who had been in prison for the last seven years. He maintained that for the restoration of peace the government also initiated negotiations with militants in Swat and signed a peace agreement. “But they still challenge the writ of the government by destructing schools, killing innocent people and the government cannot be a silent spectator in such a worrisome situation.” Haider Hoti also pledged to make serious endeavours to achieve the rights of the province including net hydel profit from the federal government, royalty on oil and gas and provision of facilities to the people in health and education sectors. Later, the chief minister gave away souvenirs to Khudai Khidmatgar Movement activists hailing from various districts including Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera. It merits a mention here that except ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan all the leadership including the widow of the late nationalist leader, Begum Nasim Wali Khan, central and provincial ministers of the party and office-bearers were present on the occasion. The function was also attended by a large number of veteran nationalists, particularly the octogenarian Khudai Khidmatgars and their kin, who were later given away souvenirs. The chief minister presented his souvenir to the party MPAs from the troubled valley of Swat. The participants of the function were also enthralled by the party’s anthem written by Ghani Khan, the elder brother of Wali Khan. It was for the first time that the party’s anthem echoed inside the Civil Secretariat, which was presented by Gulzar Alam.- Tauseef-ur-Rahman
