Dr. Taizi: A Writer Beyond Boundaries
Note: The article was written recently but before the expiry of Dr. Taizi.
Dr.Taizi is an international level personality. He is known popularly among the intellectuals, scholars, professors, PhD doctors, critics, dramatists, novelists, researchers, and to cap it all in all the circles of men of letters. His mighty pen coupled with his lofty thoughts and thought provoking approach towards literature, politics, research and Afghanistan imbroglio has taken his name and fame beyond territorial boundaries of nation states. Not only in Pakistan and Afghanistan but also in USA , Canada , Europe and Australia , he has hoisted the flag of intellectualism in Alma matters and is ruling over the hearts of lovers of knowledge.
Belonging to Momand tribe of Taizi, he was born in 1931 in the house of Kator Shah at Pabbi, district Nowshera. He got his early education in Islamia Arabia School Pabbi, founded by Bacha Khan known as Frontier Gandhi. Taizi did his M.A in Pukhto and later on PhD titled, “Saur Revolution in Afghanistan ” from Area Study Centre, University of Peshawar . After getting retired from Pakistan embassy in Kabul , he joined UNHCR, and then between 1991 to 1996 worked as Sub- Editor by publishing weekly Pukhto literature page in The Daily Frontier Post Peshawar. He has also written thousands of articles in Urdu, English and Pukhto to the daily MAASHRIQ, NEWS, DAWN, NATION, The Frontier post, WAHDAT, STATESMAN and numberless research articles on Afghan issue to Area Study centre journals.
Dr. Taizi is the author of 40 books in English, Urdu and Pukhto. He has also tried his muscles successfully in all significant genres of literature. His greatest contribution is presenting Pukhto poetry and prose to the international world. His this magnum opus has opened many avenues of research work in every nook and corner of the globe.
His name was consecutively nominated for award which he had never yearned for. He is such a personality that never hankers after such things. This year, the President of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari conferred the award Tamghaa Imtiyaaz on him for his valuable and meritorious services in the field of Pashto literature which was given away by the honourable Governor of N.W.F.P Mr. Awais Khan Ghani on 23RD March.
The most plausible and worth mentioning fact is that very recently the University of Eastern Washington DC University has published 14 trasnlated poems of Dr. Tazi from pukhto into English that has added feather in his nest. Another glaring fact is that Holly Smith in his presidential address of CCAS 2001 Annual Meeting under the title, “Moral Dilemas of Deanign” to the students in Rutgers University has winded up by quoting from Dr. Taizi. Pertaining to moral relativism, Mr. Smith says, “An example of this is provided by Sher Zaman Taizi, a Pashtun expert and village elder among the Pashtun. He describes an alternative to armed conflict that is available to the Pashtun when one village wrongs another village by killing one of its members. Traditionally, war could be avoided by the killer’s village sending to the victim’s village a girl to be taken as wife by one of the villagers. But by tradition this woman is mistreated and persecuted all her life. Mr. Taizi, however, says that the Pashtun are “trying to move beyond” the custom of treating such a woman in this inhumane fashion.”
Dr. Taizi has taken the genre of Novel in Pukhto Literature to the apogee. That is the reason that he has been given the bona fide title of, ‘Father of Pukhto Novel’. As compared to other significant novelists, there is variety in his novels and the novel touch of detective machinery. All his five novels , “Gul Khan”, “Amaanath”, “Rehman Kooraana”, “Ghunday” and “Waduh Onu Shoo” are his masterpieces and reflect the in depth study, observations, realistic and inimitable style of him. These novels are still widely read in every nook and corner of the world by lovers of Pukhto.
In their informal meeting of Kamil Adabi Jirga , Pabbi (Nowshera) all the members including Dr. Khurshid Iqbal, Dr. Yasin Iqbal and Dr.Shafiq Ahmad Khattak felicated Dr. Taizi sitaara Imtiyaaz. They also thanked both the federal and provincial governments for giving due consideration to the deserving pukhtun writers and hoped that the same policy will continue in future as well.
